Labeo rohita, commonly known as Rohu, is a freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family, native to South Asia. It has a deep, laterally compressed body, a bluish-black back, and a silvery-golden belly. Rohu can grow up to 1 meter and weigh over 25 kg.It thrives in rivers, lakes, and ponds, preferring warm waters (22–32°C). An omnivorous species, juveniles feed on zooplankton, while adults consume phytoplankton and plant matter. Rohu spawns during the monsoon season (June–August) in flooded shallow waters.Highly important in aquaculture, it is farmed extensively in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan. It is rich in protein, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids, making it a nutritious and popular food fish.
